Overdue Catch Up & Weekly Digest

I thought I’d do a general catch up and a Weekly Digest in one today because it’s been a while. Lucky you, eh?

The last few weeks have been pretty busy catching up and actually socialising in the sunshine for a change, something I am resolutely against (kind of). I’ve been blessed with the people in my life who actually make me feel cooler and younger by proxy. So that’s been nice.

A few weeks back we went to Margate for my brother’s birthday and I can honestly say I’m in love – to the point I’ve been googling jobs there. It’s not a viable option but boy would I love to live in Margate – it’s just got a vibe I can see myself embracing and I want in. Again, it’s pie in the sky but it’s nice to have a dream, right? – and you just never know!

Much as I love Brighton I do worry about the lack of bang for your buck, rent is astronomical (as with a lot of places outside London I know) and even if we are ever lucky enough to buy our own place, it will be hard to find a good deal. So sometimes I do fantasise about starting a new life in other towns, I’m sure that’s quite normal. Anyway, for now Margate has my heart and maybe the novelty will wear off, maybe it won’t – all I know is that it feels good right now!

And this leads me seamlessly into the things I am currently digging.

Dreamland, Margate

The happiest place in the South of England? Possibly. And a great venue – I’m really interested in seeing Roni Size in August – either way I’ve been once and I’m obsessed.

Mom Jeans

I’m so into Mom jeans right now. High waisted is apparently the style I’ve been seeking all my life and now it’s here I can’t stop. Any wardrobe should boast multiple pairs though so it’s practical if nothing else to stock up. Right?

L-R: Blue mom jeans, £30 ~ Blue/Black wash mom jeans, £16 (in sale) ~ Washed Black mom jeans, £32

REVENGE

Revenge (2017)

I’m not super crazy about rape revenge and this is exactly that, however I was pleasantly surprised by Revenge. I thought Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz as the abused Jen was really interesting to watch and while of course this is horrible, it’s quite an aesthetically pleasing body horror with a soundtrack and imagery reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino.

Honestly, some of the colours and shots are spectacular.

CYO This Line’s A Keeper Semi-permanent Eyeliner

This liquid liner does not budge and it’s a fine replacement for Seventeen Tattoo Me Eyeliner, which was brutally discontinued recently. Shame I spent £16 on the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner before I found this beauty, eh? The trials and tribulations of a riot grrrl, eh?

What are you digging this week?

What I’m Digging: My Autumn Wish List 🍃🍂🍁

Autumn is of course the best season and I am Autumn’s child.

I was born to be swathed in rusts and greens and mustard yellows, to roll in the softest wool and twirl about in plaid. Lucky ASOS is kicking it out of the ballpark right now then, isn’t it?

I’m trying not to shop in the lead up to my birthday and Christmas but if I were to slip, I would probably drop the rent money on these absolute gems.

picmonkey-collage
ASOS Skull Stud Halloween Earrings, £5 ~ ASOS Curve Tea Dress in Leopard Print, £28 ~ ASOS Curve Wide Buckle Waist Belt, £14

Love these pieces, that belt would be a godsend for many of my outfits, adding a funky new edge. Those studs, though.

picmonkey-collage2
ASOS Bead Pom Strand Earrings, £15 ~ Monki Pom Pom Roll Neck Jumper Dress, £50 ~ Junarose Textured Knitted Jumper, £38

That Pom Pom jumper! I am so tempted! Monki is such a cool brand and although they technically cater to ‘straight sizes’, a lot of their piece fit bigger bodies so I enjoy browsing both ASOS and their own website a lot.

picmonkey-collage3
ASOS Pleated Metallic Midi Skirt, £40 ~ ASOS Curve Shirt Dress in Block Print, £35 ~ One Day Plus Metallic Cap Sleeve Jumpsuit, £32

These metallics are so special and would be great to take into the evening. And I really love the idea of shirt dresses but I’m concerned about how they might fit around my boob area. I guess there’s only one way to find out…

~

So those are the bits I’m coveting right now, good huh?

What are you digging? ❤

Met Gala Ball 2016

It’s not all killer wasps and sticky shit around here you know. Sometimes there are pretty dresses too.

Yesterday was the supremely chic Met Gala Ball and of course all our favourites (and Rita B-ora) were out and about in their high-tech finery. I believe the theme was Technology this year, hence all the metallics.

Here are a few of my favourite looks from the night:

Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein ~ Rachel McAdams in Valentino ~ Willow Smith in Chanel

I love The Smith Family and both the kids really slayed last night. Lupita’s dress is so dreamy and the colour is just perfect for her *heart eyes emoji*, while Rachel is pure gothic babe through and through.

PicMonkey Collage6
Solange Knowles in David LaPort ~ FKA Twigs in Atelier Versace ~ Alexa Chung in Thakoon

Nobody could ever accuse Solange of playing it safe and I love this pop of solid colour on her. She’s always interesting and my favourite Knowles sister (I love you too Bey). FKA should have ditched the date because she looks increds and this jumpsuit on Alexa is pure perfection.

If I ever attend the Met Gala (next year?), you can be sure I’d wear a jumpsuit too.

PicMonkey Collage3
Zoey Deutch in Dolce& Gabbana ~ Jemima Kirke in Chanel ~ Emma Stone in Prada

I’m not sure Zoey got the memo about the theme but when your dress is this beautiful does it even matter? I think not. Jemima looks like an angel in this stunning nude gown and – hello Emma Stone! Loving everything about the hair, make-up and frock here. Bravo, love. Bravo.

Special props to:

PicMonkey Collage4
Jennifer Connelly in Louis Vuitton ~ Queen Bey in Givenchy ~ Florence Welch in Gucci

I bloody love the pretty frock and DMs look. Jen looks like she’s channeling a very 90’s aesthetic and I’m here for it. Bey smashes it every time but I like that she’s been a bit risky here (in the wake of Lemonade, was it going to be any other way?) and Florence, that opal metallic is heavenly.

There has to be a special mention for Solange’s after party look which nails sports luxe meets sci-fi chic perfectly. I’d wear the shit out of this in a darker colour:

Girl Power, yo

So that’s me mooning over some gorgeous couture, hope you liked it. You can check out the rest of the fashion and Vogue’s Met Gala coverage here.

Any favourites of your own? ❤

Couchella 2016

Yesterday, on my day off, I nearly bought a pair of Coachella endorsed sunglasses in H&M, simply because they had tiny little cats ears on them (I might go back, don’t judge).

I quickly came to my senses (again, might lose them again, my prerogative) when I realised they were pretty pricey for what they are and it was just the ‘name’ seducing me.

Coachella. Everyone knows that this is where the pretty people go to be seen, to wear fringing and sit on grass with big cups. There’s also a big ferris wheel and some music (I think).

The closest I have ever been to Coachella myself is those sunglasses and I can’t imagine this will be changing any time soon. I’ve actually never been to a festival and I can’t work out if this is because I just haven’t lived or because it really isn’t my scene at all. Hard floors and too much sunlight? Ugh.

But if a festival ever looked like it might be my scene I think it would be Coachella, not least because I’d be too busy staring at all the bohemian beauty around me. I should imagine most festivals are people-watching Heaven and that might be enough to get me over my prejudice and actually go to one (a small one).

As I say a lot, this isn’t a fashion blog, I leave that to the experts but it doesn’t mean I don’t love it and the best outfits of Coachella season are always a highlight of the fashion calendar for me – alongside The Academy Awards, The Met Ball and London Fashion Week (ooh get me).

So here are my favourites from 2016 so far:

PicMonkey Collage
Those jewel colours, though! (Both those dresses are EVERYTHING) – and Kendall rocking simple yet classic crochet
PicMonkey Collage2
I love each of these outfits for their simplicity, like these girls look like they just threw something on with no thought whatsoever *sigh*.

I also love the short hair on Lady number 3, it makes me want to have a very drastic cut (which I’m considering for the Summer).

PicMonkey Collage3
Flipping beautiful floral prints – especially when they’re rocked with sneakers ❤

I don’t know who any of these lovelies are, apart from the divine Miss Jenner, so they’ll have to forgive the lack of name checking. I have to say it’s the street style that stands out for me this year, rather than the celebrity spotting and that’s a great thing.

I want all these items in my size please! I’d also like to be outside in a park (in the shade) enjoying a light breeze right about now.

And thus concludes my thoughts on Coachella from my couch.

What do you think? ❤

The Hot (or Not) List

When I read a fashion magazine (or any magazine for that matter), I love a Hot/Not List. Not that I take much heed of what I should or shouldn’t be eating/watching/wearing, I mean I’m more programmed to fall for something on the totally uncool side of the list, anyway.

Nevertheless, I still enjoy being influenced by new books, films and fashions whenever I can. I also like the thought of doing my own list once a week or thereabouts. I was thinking of making it a Sunday exercise, and setting myself no particular rules, just listing shit I dig, such as smiles from strangers, discount Valentine’s Chocolate and The Duff, and shit I don’t (loud chewers, cold hands, Jessica Jones).

Fun, huh?

Since it’s Tuesday I’m already a couple of days late but I’m still going to post because I’m a consummate professional like that. So without further ado, what’s Hot and what’s not in my world right now?

Hot Right Now

Jumpsuits

I now own so many jumpsuits and you could say they’re a larger woman’s secret weapon. They can look really put together and awesome while still being the most comfortable thing ever. Like wearing posh pyjamas to work or dressing like a comfort-conscious superhero.

I’m currently wearing the geographical print above and let me tell you, it packs quite the punch. I feel like the fourth Angel. I’m just missing the Farah flick and big sunnies to finish off this bodacious look.

Cate Blanchett‘s Bafta 2016 Dress

This Alexander McQueen dress with it’s finely embroidered bodice and black feathered floor length skirt is absolutely breathtaking, and Cate looks insanely gorgeous in it. Was this woman born for the red carpet, or what?

Other highlights of Bafta night for me were Leo‘s acceptance speech thanking his mum and John Boyega winning EE Rising Star. Also, Kate Winslet, always.

Fierce (are we still saying that?)

Bowie Tribute Looks

Both Costume Designer Sandy Powell and Queen Gaga took to the carpets (Bafta and the Grammys, repectively) this week in outfits that would do Ziggy proud.

I have a feeling there were some negative comments regarding these choices but I refuse to read them anymore so let’s just declare both women bloody gorgeous and leave it at that.

Gaga then took to the stage and gave a tribute performance of a lifetime. She looked like she was having so much fun. Yasssss my Queen.

I’m a Belieber

Carpool Karaoke

I haven’t seen the new Biebs carpool yet (heading home to watch it though!) but I just love this series. I’m not the hugest James Corden fan but in these I adore him, he’s so watchable and warm. Basically, it wouldn’t matter who was in the ‘celebrity’ seat, I’d still watch and be hugely entertained.

So far Adele‘s has been the best. Obvi.

Not So Much

Cold Hands

Why are my poor hands always so cold? And why haven’t I bought any gloves yet this Winter? Oh that’s right, so far it’s been too mild. Now it’s too cold and tomorrow I’ll be running through a water sprinkler in a bikini probably.

Global warming problems.

So you’re on a diet?

Diet Talk

I now know exactly how much the nice lady in the Co-op is hoping to lose in weight before her holiday in Morocco – because she couldn’t wait to tell me.

Look, I get it, we’re women and this is what we’re supposed to do but I don’t want this talk in my life. Good for you, lose a stone, feel great – I’m over here trying to buy a Peparami and move on with my day, thankyouverymuch.

Memes that pit women against each other

You’re probably seen the Audrey Hepburn Vs. The Kardashians meme before, the one that says something along the lines of “In a world full of Kardashians, be Audrey.” It does the rounds on FB every now and again. Christ it pisses me off!

Sometimes it’s not Audrey, sometimes you get Princess Diana and I just don’t even know where to start with any of it. They’re implying that Audrey/Di has a level of class Kim & Co will never possess and that’s just nuts. It’s just slut shaming (and the rest) all over again and I’m not down. I am not down at all.

I haven’t posted the meme because I wish it would curl up and die, so have an image of Kim dressed similarly to Audrey instead! You see, anyone can look like butter wouldn’t melt. *insert knife stabby emoji here*

So there we have it, what’s hot and what’s not this week.

What’s hot in your eyes? Anything I need to check out? 💗

Happy Birthday Camelia Ophelia!

359b9061ed30ef55d73cf1fae2858515

Happy birthday to my main girl, Tatty whose wonderful blog, Camelia Ophelia turned 1 today!

I’ve raved about the blog several times throughout this year and I will continue to do so probably until the end of time, or until one of us stops blogging (which I can’t see happening). So you already know I think the world of this girl and love the way she can pull together an outfit.

I love fashion, even though I’m just finding my feet at the age of 38 on what I think looks good on me and what I love, but Tatty is a natural who always looks put together and chic AF. I see this is as an art form, a true extension of a creative mind and get annoyed when people poo-poo fashion lovers and women who love make-up, etc (not that anyone’s doing that here, or I’ll have ’em).

a54c75a2-4c9b-4d9f-a800-ccabc8948c1b

But to me Camelia Ophelia is much more than that. I can hear Tatty’s voice in all her posts and it’s getting stronger, along with the writing. It’s so lovely to see and it’s even nicer to witness other people enjoying it. And of course, she’s one of my most lovely friends and my partner-in-work-and-crime, so obviously she’s an incredible human being!

Anyway, happy birthday my love! Can’t wait to read more.

I’ve also been nominated by Tatty for The Sunshine Blogger Award so I’ll do a post on that over the weekend.

And then I’m going to tag some of you babies in it, so get ready! ❤

Stuff I DEFINITELY Won’t Be Buying in the January Sales

January is a very depressing month for many. For me it’s kind of okay because I’ve had extensive Hermit Training and don’t mind not seeing anyone but my husband for extended periods of time. I also have 78 unread books in a pile next to the bed so I’ll be busy, thanks.

That said, I do have to go to work like most other people and that means being near the internet and the January Sales which are there just to cheer us up, aren’t they? Nothing like instant gratification to fight off the New Year Blues, if only for the 15 seconds it takes to tear into the packaging and unearth our new friends.

I’ve been coveting quite a few things, how unusual for me, and here they are. Some things that are already in the sale or I hope soon will be, so I CAN RESIST THEM and feel VIRTUOUS.

All items in this post available via ASOS.com (but of course).

PicMonkey Collage
ASOS Curve Monochrome Jumpsuit, £22.50 (Reduced from £45) ~ ASOS Curve Twist Bardot Skater Dress, £30 ~ Adidas Originals Polka Dot Track Pants, £33 (Reduced from £55)

God I love this jumpsuit. This would be a very welcome addition to the work wardrobe, looks instantly smart and chic, and would rock with a bold, colourful statement necklace to offset the monochrome.

That dress! I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable with that much flesh on show in the office but I do feel my shoulders are one of my best features, so I could rock this in the pub feeling feminine AF. Lovely and a little bit ‘braver’ than my usual style.

These track pants are currently out of stock in my size but I want them so bad. Right now I live in gym gear after work, so these would add a much needed cool injection. Not that I care about being hot in the gym (just as well really).

PicMonkey Collage3
New Look Inspire Tailored Coat, £29.50 (Reduced from £39.99) ~ Adidas Originals Pastel Rose Shopper Bag, £19.50 (Reduced from £33) ~ ASOS Curve Knitted Bodycon Dress in Metallic Stripe, £19 (Reduced from £38)

I feel like I haven’t quite nailed the coat thing this Winter which isn’t such a disaster given that we haven’t had weather cold enough yet. I don’t think this tailored lovely is a very warm looking option but it is gorgeous. And I’ve got some great brooches that need showcasing, so…

Another one for the gym and isn’t it pretty?

This dress has been on my Wish List for a long time. I adore it. I like knit and basically, I just want it, okay?

PicMonkey Collage2
ASOS Curve Lounge Pant, £22 ~ ASOS Curve Jumpsuit with Zips, £24 (Reduced from £48) ~ ASOS Curve Plunge Wrap Bow Side Teddy, £25

I thought this was the whole set but it appears just to be the bottoms. You can get the top to match here. How cosy!

Another jumpsuit and actually, if I had to choose between this and the monochrome (above), I’d have a hard time. I mean look at it. It looks so finished. I love the zips, which add a real utility edge. Dreamy.

How hot is this? I’m not a roaming around the flat in a negligee type but if I was… I’d do it in items like this. SEXY.

And last but not least, on top of my Most Wanted List, this bad boy:

image1xxl (1)
Babyliss New Big Hair, £45

My boo, Tatty of Camelia Ophelia has this and I’m certain it would transform my life. I have big hair already but it has a tendency toward frizziness, especially in the windy weather. This could just be the thing to finally tame it. Image how chic I could finally be!

~

So there you go, there’s my impossibly superficial Sales Wish List. Of course, I won’t be purchasing any of this for myself because I’ve decided to take charge of my finances in 2016 and won’t be in a position to shop until at least April.

I’ve also decided to treat myself to the ultimate #selflove tattoo (it will be small and discreet), inspired by this post. Of course I will reveal all when the time comes but any spare pennies will be going towards that (my final, yet vital extravagance).

I’m serious about clearing my debt, but a girl can still dream, right?

UPDATE: I accidentally bought the stripey dress and the monochrome jumpsuit. They were ridiculously cheap (reduced further). Tatty made me do it! Ha. (What? It’s not New Year YET).

A Little Miss Guided

This is not me (via
This is not me (via Unsplash)

It’s with a start that I realise I haven’t done my annual Autumn-loving post and it’s already mid-way through October. I mean, who am I anymore?

I don’t, however, think there’s much I can add to previous posts that hasn’t already been said. Pumpkin Spice Latte, chunky knit scarves, crunchy leaves – you know the drill by now.

So I thought I’d do something a little different (ish) and blog about clothes (I won’t lie, mostly inspired by Tatty’s great Layering post). I know I do this semi-regularly when I talk about my ASOS wishlist (well I’ve done it twice) but I thought I’d mix it up and talk about one of my favourite plus-size brands, Missguided.

As I type this I am posed with the question: if a clothing brand offers a plus-size range, does that make it a plus-size brand, or must it cover only plus-sizes to qualify? I guess the the answer is: who actually cares? As long as there’s enough material to go around my ample body. Which there seldom is with ‘regular’ brands but that’s another post for another day, yo.

So, to my top picks from Missguided’s new plus-size range:

PicMonkey Collage2

Asymmetric Shirt, £28
Printed Silk Shirt Dress, £28
Checked Shirt Dress, £30

Oh em gee, check out these over-sized shirt/dresses! I particularly yearn for the gorgeous print of the middle number, look at that wonderful autumn palette. Want.

PicMonkey Collage3

Skull Print Jersey Dress, £20
Suede Slit Front Midi, £28
Drop Hem Cap Sleeve Chiffon Top, £25

What office wardrobe doesn’t need a little injection of the macabre round Halloween? Plus, that skirt is to die for. TDF!

PicMonkey Collage

Slinky Wrap Dress, £30
Faux Leather Skater Skirt, £20
Cape Dress, £35

Christmas Season will soon be upon us and I’m pretty sure I’ve worn the same dress (or v. similar) to our work’s do two years running. This year I think I’ll treat myself. The green and red dresses aren’t my usual style but what’s a party for if not to go against the grain? I happen to believe I would rock the shit out of both. The leather skirt is just cute, I’d dress it down with a casual tee.

So these are the items I’m most coveting right now. I actually really enjoy Missguided from a quality and design point of view. It might not be the largest range yet, in comparison to ASOS Curve (The Queen of Fat Fashion) but it’s a start.

It feels to me as though the plus garments have actually been thought about and constructed with the body in mind. I’m not actually that sure what the fuck I’m talking about, just that the few things I’ve picked up from the range in the past have been spot on. So I definitely intend to shop here more (any time you want to stand up and be acknowledged, Mystery Benefactor, I’m ready).

I will say that the website is dreadful and needs a lot of work. (Don’t worry, I’ve helpfully tweeted to tell them my thoughts). But from a value/customer service/quality/selection/sizing point of view, they’re doing okay.

Great accessories too.

Oh, and if you’re looking for a little creative inspiration, check out the new Missguided offices. Who wouldn’t feel positive taking a meeting in the Unicorn Stable?

Getting Into Fall Spirit

tumblr_ni18ej13lS1rivnsyo1_1280

I’ve been tagged by Keeping Track to partake in a questionnaire about my favourite time of year. Cute, huh?

The gist is to answer 19 questions about Autumn and then tag 10 fellow bloggers to see what they have to say. I might not get to ten whole nominations, but I’ll definitely pass on the questionnaire.

So, to my questions!

Favourite candle scent? I’m not great with artificial scent, unfortunately. It tends to do my head in so I rarely burn scented candles. However, around Christmas to impress visitors, I might go for something spicy and cinnamon based, maybe a French Vanilla.

Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate? Tea, all day, every day. Strong (2 teabags), no sugar, splash of milk. It’s true what they say, never accept a badly made cup of tea.

What is the best fall memory you have? Autumn in Vancouver has been my most memorable to date (2008). I was living alone again, having come out of a bad long-term relationship, had just had a wild  summer and I was falling in love long distance with my now husband, who was in the UK.

My fondest memory from this year was all the walking I did with friends, supping on hot chocolates, meeting my best friend David after work to write in a cafe most evenings, and pumpkin carving with his family for the very first time.

Best fragrance for fall? I don’t wear perfume ever, so nothing.

Favourite Thanksgiving food? England doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving so this tradition is not part of my year, however my mouth salivates at the thought of anything pecan/pumpkin flavoured.

Most worn sweater? Plain grey sweatshirt, a la Jennifer Beals in Flashdance.

Football games or jumping in leaf piles? Leaves. I hate football.

Favourite type of pie? Anything, but if we’re talking sweet, how about cherry or traditional apple?

What is autumn weather like where you live? Wet and miserable usually. That’s the great British summer/autumn/spring/winter. I dream of sunny but cold, crisp days with crunchy leaves underfoot and if I’m lucky I might get a few.

Which make-up trend do you prefer, dark lips or winged liner? I’m all about smokey eyes every day. Black Kohl is my staple, I’m terrible at the winged liner though. I’d like to be more ambitious with my lips as well, and prefer berry hues.

What song really gets you into the fall spirit? Can I have November Rain by Guns N Roses?

Is pumpkin spice worth the hype? Fuck yeah. But not the horribly sweet stuff we get in the UK. It’s all about the Pumpkin Spice you get in the US/North America.

Favourite fall TV show? I like the American Horror Story series. And Scream(TV Series) has just appeared on Netflix, and that’s quite good. Anything you can snuggle up to under a fleece blanket will do in the Autumn.

Skinny jeans or leggings? Leggings under a dress or massive baggy tee/cardigan combo. Skinny jeans/jeggings aren’t what you want for lounge wear.

Combat boots or Uggs? DMs. Obviously.

Halloween – yay or nay? All the yays. Except a lot of people here are terrible at it. We’re getting better and personally, I love it. Not sure who I’ll be this year yet.

Fall mornings or evenings? Evenings. I like it when it’s dark straight after work. I like to be warm and snuggly.

What do you think about Black Friday? Again, being English it’s not as big a thing as in the US. It’s started becoming bigger, but I avoid it. I think it’s a bit pointless and indulgent.

One fall 2015 trend you love? Big gorgeous jewel coloured coats. Dark nails. Thick knits. Boots. I’m not sure these are strictly 2015 trends but I love these things every year for A/W.

Here are the bloggers I tag:

What are your views on autumn?

What I’m Digging: My ASOS Wish List #2

It could be said that I have a real issue with shopping. I shop when I’m sad, I shop when I’m celebrating, bored, frustrated, uninspired. Yes, I know this is not a good thing.

I’m making the effort to change my habits though, because there are other things I need to be doing with my money, such as paying for night classes (gonna be a coder, innit). Sometimes, it’s okay though to break your new rule with a pay-day treat, or a little something you just know it going to make you look like a fucking rock star.

Here are the things I have my eye on this August:

Sweet Treats

I look *almost* as perfect as this model

I feel I also have to share with the group that I’ve finally found the Jumpsuit of Destiny.

I’ve waited months for it to come back into stock in my size and now I’ve got it in my possession and it’s incredible! It fits like a glove, cinches in where I want it to, flows where I need it to. I’m in jumpsuit heaven, I tell you!

So, what are you into this Summer?
